Why isn’t anyone coming to my website?

Quite often people will have a website built and think to themselves, “I’m going to get rich!” Unfortunately, it doesn’t usually work like that. You cannot build it and just expect people to come. Websites are great for marketing a small business but only if potential customers can find it. If your site lacks traffic, you aren’t doing these things.

Search Engine Optimization
Think of search engines like phone books. People use them to find products and services that they are looking for. Your website needs to be optimized for the specific keywords and phrases you want to rank for in the search engines. Most consumers will only search the first page for products and services and getting on that first page can be quite a challenge. However, if you choose the right keyword combinations (AKA long tail keywords) with the least competition, you can get your website on the first page too. This means automatic incoming traffic.

PPC
You aren’t using a pay-per-click campaign. Setting up a PPC ad campaign is relatively easy to do and can be done through most popular search engines and social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter. This way, if you are having a hard time getting listed on the first page of search engines, you have the option of paying your way onto the first page. Large companies frequently use social media to buy clicks that  direct users to a landing page. Landing pages allow site owners to market a specific discount, item, or service in exchange for the users email address. The site owner will later use that email to send out newsletters and other promotions to try and get the user to buy something from their website.

 

Social Media
Have you included social media links and share buttons on your website? If not, you should. Social media is an effective and easy way to get visitors to your website. Social networks are in real-time. When you post a link on a social network the clicks you receive from that link is almost instantaneous. Work on growing your social networks and create and audience that you can market to throughout the day.

Blogging
You don’t have any interesting content on your website and you aren’t blogging. In today’s world information is what most people are searching for. How to this and what is that. Start blogging on your website now. If you do not have a blog, you are behind. If you are having trouble figuring out what to write about, think of what your site visitors may want to know. Don’t simply blog about your business or what you’re doing. Choose topics that your visitors can benefit from. For instance if your business is auto repair, make a blog about car maintenance. What can your visitors do to keep their vehicles in good running order? While this may seem counter-intuitive, these are the types of things your readers want to know.

Street Advertising
Even if you are an internet based business, don’t forget to use conventional advertising. On your business cards, add your website URL and social media handles. Use branded hash tags on promotional t-shirts and other promotional material that you give away. These advertising methods still work.
